Department of Vedanga Jyotisha

वेदांगज्योतिषविभागः

About the Department The Department of Vedang Jyotish of Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University is established in the academic year 2009-10. The course contents of UG & PG are designed systematically so that they cover all the three branches of Jyotisha viz. Siddhanta, Samhita, and Hora. Course contents are prepared to connect traditional Jyotish Shastra with the Modern developments. We teach contents from the original texts of Jyotish and also modern methods of Astrology. We also focus on practical approach as we have included case-study of Horoscopes in our syllabus. We try to connect original texts as per the requirement of the Modern Society.

About the Subject

Jyotish Shastra, referred to be the crown among the 6 vedangas by Maharshi Lagadha, is described to be the eyes of the Vedas. The word ‘Jyoti’ itself means LIGHT. Jyotish Shastra is a great guide during bleak times. It is very helpful for decision making in crucial times. Jyotish is the final option to a layman when one founds no other way to overcome one’s misfortune. Vedanga Jyotish has evoloved as a shastra 1000’s of years ago in India.

According to Hinduism, the ultimate goal of human life is to attain Moksha and for that one need to perform several rituals as prescribed the vedas. Jyotish shastra is developed to determine the most favourable time for performing such vedic rituals. This involves precise mathematical calculations concerning the planetary motions, positions of stars etc. and so mathematics is an integral part of it.

Vedanga Jyotish is branched into 3 parts (called skandhas) viz. Siddhanta, Samhita, and Hora. The Siddhanta skandha of Jyotish deals with the scientific details of the celestial bodies which are valid even after thousands of years. The Hora skandha is the art of predicting and guiding through the calculations performed using the previous skandha. Samhita Skandha brings life to the shastra by describing each of the living and non-living beings such as trees, horses, elephants, soil, water, clouds. Jyotisha is a perfect combination of Science and Art (Siddhanta and Hora) where the astronomical calculations are used to determine the cosmic effects on living and non-living beings.

Since the time immemorial, Vedic astrology has been the vital part of the life of Hindus. It is solving life's mystery from very ancient time. Vedic astrology can predict about any sphere of your life on the basis of the position of planet in your birth chart. Vedic astrology horoscopes are decided on the basis of the time and place of your birth.

Even though the science of Jyotish is developed thousands of years ago, it is applicable even today. The time systems based on various celestial objects such as the Sun, the Moon, the Jupiter, the Stars are balanced to match each other which is still not found in any other modern time system.
